GRAND ISLAND — If you didn’t catch the tri-cities premiere roller derby team in action in January, you’ll have another chance April 13. The Platte Valley Roller Vixens will go head-to-head with the Veteran City Rollers out of Emporia, Kan., at the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island. Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for children 2 to 12 years old, and children two and under are free. Tickets can be purchased through the Events Center or online via ticketmaster. All seats are general admission. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., first whistle blows at 7:30 p.m. The organization the team is spotlighting for this bout is the Central Nebraska Humane Society of Grand Island. The CNHS is an open entry shelter located in the northeast corner of Grand Island that cares for over 3,000 stray, unwanted, sick, or injured animals each year. The purpose of the Central Nebraska Humane Society is to provide shelter to lost and homeless animals, to educate the community about the humane care and treatment of all animals, to advocate animal welfare, and to further the bond between people and animals. During the bout, Humane Society members will be on hand to discuss their organization, and food donations (any canned, and iams or Purina dry food) for both cats and dogs will be accepted. A split-the-pot will also be held during the half-time, with raffle ticket sales to be split between a lucky audience member and a donation to the Central Nebraska Humane Society. The Vixens are 2-0 this season, playing back-to-back bouts against the Norfolk Bruizin’ Bettys. The team will be on the road to face the Dames of Anarchy in Mason City, Iowa on March 30, and the Salina Sirens in Salina, Kansas on May 11. Click here for our full 2013 schedule.
The Vixens are taking the plunge for the 2nd year! This bone-chilling event invites participants, also known as plungers, to collect pledges from friends and family for plunging into the icy waters Yanney Heritage Park, located at 2020 West 11th in Kearney. A plunger can be anyone with enough nerve and heart, willing to dip more than their toes in some freezing water for a good cause. Minimum donations start at $50. Plungers can participate on an individual basis or be part of a team. And if you’re taking the plunge, just know that this event is all about having fun while doing good. In other words, dress up in a costume or come up with a theme for your team, the wackier the better. 100% of the pledge we raise will be donated to Special Olympics Nebraska.
The Roller Vixens are proud to announce we’ll be hosting a one night only a screening of the compelling documentary Derby, Baby! The film premiered on the East Coast at the Atlanta Film Festival on March 31, 2011 and on the West Coast at the Sonoma International Film Festival on April 14, 2011 and now we’re bringing it to Grand Island, Nebraska on February 19th, at the Grand Theatre. Admission will be $7, with doors opening at 6:00pm, the film at 7:00pm, and a Q&A session to follow. If you’ve attended a modern women’s roller derby bout, you’ve seen it, maybe even smelled it: the love, the pure addiction that drives tens of thousands of women around the globe to don fishnets and pseudonyms for the privilege of kicking each others asses. There’s a perfect storm of D-I-Y culture and women’s empowerment in the U.S. and around the world, so it makes sense that this latest version of roller derby would take hold of busy women and their daughters everywhere — literally everywhere. One recent tabulation estimates the number of female league-affiliated skaters in the U.S. at over 20,000 and steadily rising, and the first-ever Roller Derby World Cup in 2011 had women from Auckland to Dublin strapping on skates to compete internationally. But how is all this energy and passion evolving the sport? Why are the skaters and supporters willing to work for free when the numbers of paying fans are in the hundreds of thousands and growing steadily? Is women’s roller derby a legitimate sport with a rightful place in the sports media spotlight? Or is it merely a fun pastime where women can make friends and be part of something bigger than themselves? And ultimately, will derby join the evolution of similar freak-sports turned street-sport turned professional sport, like skateboarding or snowboarding? For the first time ever, the story of women’s roller derby is covered from both a national and international perspective, as Emmy Award-winning filmmakers Robin Bond and Dave Wruck take you with them on their international quest to learn why women’s flat track roller derby is the fastest growing sport in the world. Derby, Baby! explores the drama, the friendships, and the addictive nature of the women’s flat-track roller derby, including never-before-seen bout footage of the international flat-track roller derby champions. Narrated by Whip It star and actress/musician Juliette Lewis, who also appears on-camera, the Derby, Baby! story spans the most turbulent and exciting time for the sport in decades, featuring interviews with promoter Jerry “The Commissioner” Seltzer, whose father Leo Seltzer invented roller derby in the 1930s; and Chuck Morris, President of AEG Live Rocky Mountains and one of the most ardent promoters of modern roller derby. The film looks at the many incarnations of the sport since its invention 77 years ago, and explores the WWF-like legacy and over-played television coverage of the past that threatens the sport’s image even today. Also featured are the new “rock stars” of roller derby, whose charisma and athleticism may be the...
